I posed a challenging test in logic for ChatGPT 3.5 by posing to it a modification of a
well-known conundrum.
Patrick: If a glass that has a fluid half way up to the top is either half full or half empty,
is a glass full of 'half and half' half full or half empty?
ChatGPT:
The concept of whether a glass is half full or half empty is often used as a
metaphor for one's perspective on life or a situation. It's a matter of interpretation
and perspective rather than a strict definition.
In the case of a glass filled with "half and half" (a mixture of equal parts milk and cream),
one could argue that it is both half full and half empty simultaneously. From one perspective,
it's half full because it contains a significant portion of liquid. From another perspective,
it's half empty because there's still space for more liquid.
Ultimately, whether the glass is considered half full or half empty depends on the observer's
viewpoint and interpretation of the situation.
My Comments:
First, ChatGPT made a silly mistake of declaring that the glass has more room in it, which it
does not. It's as if it forgot the given information -- the glass is full.
Second, I was hoping that ChatGPT would tell me that the glass is half full and half empty
for both its milk and cream contents. Yes, this is a subtle, frivolous conclusion, but all it
does is to take the original perspective one level higher. In other words, it's patterned after
the original conundrum.
Perhaps this conundrum is a useful test for LLMs.
