Question 24: Is Jesus God?
These are the verses Evans presented to make his claim.
In the 'no' category, we have
John 1:18, John 14:28, Hebrews 7:25, 9:24, 1 Corinthians 15:28.In the 'yes' category, we have
John 1:1, 10:30, Colossians 2:9-10, Revelation 1:17-18Note: If I find verses to be repetitive or unnecessary, I may decide not to
My standard prefacing comments:
On the No side:
*
No man hath seen God at any time, the only begotten Son, which is in
the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him. -- John 1:18
Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you.*
If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father:
for my Father is greater than I. -- John 14:28
Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto*
God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.
-- Hebrews 7:25
For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which*
are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the
presence of God for us: -- Hebrews 9:24
On the Yes side:
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the*
Word was God.
-- John 1:1
I and my Father are one.*
-- John 10:30
For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. 10 And ye are*
complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:.
-- Colossians 2:9-10
And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand
upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last: 18 I am he
that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen;
and have the keys of hell and of death.
-- Revelation 1:17-18
Jesus is God in the flesh. I'm not going to comment on the affirmative verses.
There is nothing new here. This is all resolved with the mystery of the
Trinitarian nature of God. In many places of the New Testament we find Jesus
claiming, in one manner or another, that His Father in Heaven is greater
than He. I'll give one more:
4 And, being assembled together with them, commanded them thatNo man has seen God in His full glory, except for Jesus, the Son of God.
they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of
the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. 5 For John truly
baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost
not many days hence. 6 When they therefore were come together,
they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again
the kingdom to Israel? 7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to
know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own
power. 8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is
come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem,
and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the
earth. 9 And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld,
he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.
-- Acts 1:4-9
A family can be "one", but that doesn't mean that its members are all equal
to each other.
Example of the hiddenness of God in Christ:
For a special occasion, John gave Mary a present: some object in a pretty
wrapper. Soon, John and Mary had an intellectual disagreement about
whether the "present" is what is in the wrappings or what is in the
wrappings, as well as the wrappings. Who is right? Well, in a sense,
they're both right. When we saw Jesus or any theophany, all we ever
saw was the wrappings. We were never permitted to see the full glory
of God inside.
To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself,
not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us
the word of reconciliation. -- 2 Corinthians 5:19
In the Old Testament, it was prophesied that someone would be coming
who would have god-like credentials! In the following case, the
"Son of man".
9 I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of daysIn the following two verses of Isaiah we see an overview of the birth,
did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head
like the pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheels
as burning fire.13 I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man
came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days,
and they brought him near before him.-- Daniel 7:9, 13
6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the
government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be
called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting
Father, The Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government
and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and
upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment
and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the
Lord of hosts will perform this.
-- Isaiah 9:6-7
13 And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto theAnd then:
children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your
fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What
is his name? what shall I say unto them? 14 And God said unto
Moses, I Am That I Am: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto
the children of Israel, I Am hath sent me unto you.
-- Exodus 3:13-14
54 Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing:Why do you suppose Jesus's peers wanted to stone Him?
it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is
your God: 55 Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and
if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you:
but I know him, and keep his saying. 56 Your father Abraham
rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad. 57 Then
said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and
hast thou seen Abraham? 58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily,
I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. 59 Then took they
up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out
of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.
-- John 8:54-59
Question 25: Did Jesus and Pilate have a conversation?
Remember this: The righteous are mindful of the poor and help them; the wicked do not! (Proverbs 29:7)
You either get control of your lusts and feelings of entitlements or they will get control of you. -- Ilfinor
