Question 29: How did Judas commit suicide?
Mr. Evans, I thought that these questions were to be posed in a form
requiring a 'yes' or 'no' reply. So, I will reformulate this question to:
Question 29: Did Judas commit suicide by hanging?
These are the verses Evans presented to make his claim.
In the 'no' category, we have
Acts 1:18.In the 'yes' category, we have
Matthew 27:5.Note: If I find verses to be repetitive or unnecessary, I may decide not to
My standard prefacing comments:
On the No side:
16 Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled,*
which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning
Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus. 17 For he was
numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry. 18 Now
this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling
headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed
out. -- Acts 1:16-18
On the Yes side:
4 Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood.*
And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that. 5 And he cast
down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went
and hanged himself. -- Matthew 27:5
My immediate question is that if Judas fell, from where did he fall and why?
Don't we have to come up with some scenario that makes sense of this?
I think so.
It is considered fact that Adolf Hitler, at his moment of suicide, simultaneously
took a cyanide capsule and shot himself in the head -- guaranteeing that he
would die quickly. I'm supposing that the primary purpose of this dual effort
was so that he would not chance a failed suicide.
Let me offer a scenario: Having decided on suicide, Judas took with him a
rope or something similar by which he could hang himself. But where to do
it? He apparently knew of a drop-off of some considerable height. I further
suppose that there was a tree near to the ledge of the drop-off. So, he tied
one end of the rope around his kneck and the other to a limb of his chosen
tree. Then he merely jumped over the ledge, knowing that either the rope
or the fall would kill him. Apparently, the limb either broke immediately
or soon after his jump, and he fell to the ground, headlong, bursting asunder
in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.
By the way, just in case anyone is interested:
12 And I said unto them, If ye think good, give me my price; And in its fulfilment:
and if not, forbear. So they weighed for my price thirty pieces
of silver. 13 And the Lord said unto me, Cast it unto the potter:
a goodly price that I was prised at of them. And I took the thirty
pieces of silver, and cast them to the potter in the house of the
Lord. -- Zechariah 11:12-13
11 For ye have the poor always with you; but me ye have not always. Is there anyone, who just read these few verses, who is capable of imagining
12 For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did
it for my burial. 13 Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel
shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this
woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her. 14 Then one of
the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests, 15 And
said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you?
And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver.
-- Matthew 26:11-15
Question 30: Did the women who discovered Christ's empty tomb tell others?
For the time being, I will leave this question for the apologists to deal with.
Remember this: The righteous are mindful of the poor and help them; the wicked do not! (Proverbs 29:7)
